Advancing knowledge about stroke recovery

A Very Early Rehabilitation Trial (AVERT) is the largest stroke rehabilitation trial undertaken globally. Over 2000 participants from 56 stroke units in 8 countries were recruited into the trial.

Results were published in the medical journal, The Lancet. The study found that very early intensive rehabilitation started within 24 hours of stroke interferes with the recovery process, with fewer patients having excellent long-term recovery.

The results were unexpected and differed from smaller pilot studies. The results of the trial will change stroke care guidelines and improve patient outcomes.
